As we were thinking to the year ahead we couldn’t help but think of all the opportunities but also all the responsibilities that will come with them. This season of life is busy, and last year certainly embraced our 2022 Word: implement, but we’ve both been yearning for less hustle and more slow. That almost seems impossible with having a career, raising kids, having active social lives, etc. but establishing rhythms helps to create simple rituals that become a familiar part of our day, ultimately making us feel more at home. They help us create emotional connection, meaningful habits, and to become a better version of ourselves so we can serve those around us with intention and grace.
After some great conversations about our past, present, and future we found the word that spoke to our hearts and encapsulated our vision for this year of growth and change:
One of the biggest reasons we chose “rhythm” for 2023 is because it can serve as a reminder to slow down and appreciate the present moment. In today’s fast-paced world, we often get caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily life and forget to take a step back and appreciate the beauty of the world around us. By focusing on the rhythms of our lives, we can learn to live in a more balanced and harmonious way within the environments we cultivate.
Another reason we chose “rhythm” is because it can be a powerful tool for personal growth and self-improvement. By identifying and working with the rhythms in our lives, we can learn to manage our time more effectively, set and achieve our goals, and improve our overall well-being.
Finally, in addition to these personal benefits, rhythm can also play a vital role in building stronger communities and relationships. By understanding and working with the rhythms of those around us, we can improve communication and collaboration, foster a sense of connection and belonging, and create a more harmonious and peaceful world.
Setting a “word of the year” can be a fun and meaningful activity for individuals or groups. We like to do both (we also did our own personal words; click here to read Shannon’s Word of the Year and click here to read Jenna’s Word of the Year)! Selecting your own “word of the year” involves choosing a single word that embodies your goals, values, or priorities for the coming year. Here’s how you can go about setting your own word of the year:
Before you choose your word, it can be helpful to take some time to reflect on the past year. What were the highlights? How about the challenges? What did you learn? This can give you insight into what you want to focus on or prioritize in the coming year.
What do you want to achieve in the coming year? What are your personal or professional goals? Your word can be related to these goals, helping you stay motivated and focused as you work towards them.
Once you have a sense of what you want to focus on, make a list of potential words that could serve as your word of the year. Think about words that capture the essence of what you want to achieve, or that represent your values or priorities.
As you look at your list of potential words, consider the connotations of each one. What feelings or associations does each word bring to mind? Choose a word that resonates with you and that you feel comfortable incorporating into your life.
Once you have narrowed down your list to a few contenders, try using the word in different contexts to see how it feels. Does it fit with your goals and priorities? Motivate you? Does it feel like a natural fit for you?
Once you have chosen your word, consider sharing it with others. This can be a great way to hold yourself accountable and get support as you work towards your goals. You can share your word with friends, family, or a larger community, such as a social media group or online forum.
Throughout the year, take time to reflect on your word and how it is shaping your actions and thoughts. Are you living up to your goals and values as embodied by your word? Are there ways you can further incorporate your word into your daily life? One of the best ways to not forget these important regular check-ins is to schedule it ahead of time. We love using our Day Designer planners for this and schedule monthly reminders for reflection.
By setting a word of the year, you can focus on what matters most to you and make progress towards your goals. Whether you choose something related to your career, relationships, health, or something else entirely, make sure it resonates with you and helps you live a more authentic, meaningful life.
