Labor Day holds a special meaning for us this year because this year it is being followed by our new resources coming to The Busy Bee designed with you in mind. We have been dreaming of these resources for quite a while now, and with a little more time on our hands (hello, nanny!), we are able to be hyperfocused while we work to complete them in the next several weeks. We may lose a little sleep along the way, but it will all be worth it in the end. Needless to say, we are beyond excited to continue inspiring you to spend more time hosting your loved ones, beginning with our sophisticated Labor Day tablescape.
We were beyond thrilled to collaborate with Patina & Petals on this tablescape who meticulously designed the floral centerpieces that took this design to the next level. Be sure to visit their website and consider this darling sister duo for your next special event floral needs.

Refining Our Tablescape Aesthetics
You may have taken notice, but we have been strategically refining our tablescape aesthetics to a more sophisticated look and feel. While we enjoy fun and bold table designs, we have come to adore a level of casual elegance achieved through natural elements, warm earth tones and varying textures. Our personal styles have been evolving as we’ve been designing our homes, and it’s been naturally spilling over into our seasonal tablescape designs.
Often when we hear the word “elegant”, we tend to think of intricate and elaborate details. As it pertains to table decor, we may even envision an overly dressed table dressed in full-length linens set with ornate details for a lavish affair. But as we continue to hone in on our style, “elegance” has come to mean sophistication. It means simple yet stylish. It means cultivated yet casual. It means functional yet refined.
When we set the table, we want it to feel like an extension of our home. We want guests to feel encouraged to pull up a chair and enjoy engaging conversations while they dine. We want it to be a place where others connect and relationships are deepened. And above all, we want it to inspire you to set your table with the same intentions.
Sophisticated Labor Day Tablescape
With every given holiday, we do our best to design a thoughtful tablescape and this holiday is no different. This year, we had a sophisticated Labor Day tablescape in mind and the final design did not disappoint.
Our biggest challenge has been sourcing all the details in the midst of a global pandemic. However, we have to give it up for online shopping and local pick up and drive up services, honestly the best thing ever, I was able to discover great online coupon websites like Raise! A convenience we do not take for granted, and something we encourage you to utilize when time and safety is of the essence.
And because we don’t take everything we do too seriously, we also designed a fun element to coincide with our sophisticated Labor Day tablescape – a Chips & Dip Pairing Party with free printables!! Be sure to read this post for all the details on how to pull it together. Then, download the coordinating Pairing Guide and Food Labels. It’s super easy and cost-effective to put together and adds a fun element to the celebration!
5 Easy Ways to Create a Sophisticated Labor Day Tablescape
We know we can sound like broken records but creating a sophisticated tablescape is often easier than you think. All it takes is building layers that coordinate with your theme and mixing natural and more neutral colored tones. Be sure to set a place setting for every person around the table. Then, plate your dishes in decorative serveware whether they were made from scratch or purchased premade.
Need some inspiration? Here’s how we designed our Labor Day Tablescape.
1. Incorporate Earth Tones and Muted Tones
Earth tones are the colors we see in the natural things around us. Think brown soil (when mixing your own soil isn’t your thing, there’s always prebagged organic soil for sale), green leaves and cloudy skies. They are colors that bring a sense of warmth and sophistication to any design. Incorporating earth tones into your Labor Day tablescape will help elevate the design effortlessly.
If you’re looking to add color to your tablescape, opt for muted tones to create a subtle display. Labor Day is the celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers, so we often incorporate red, white in blue into our design. With that, we chose creamy whites, deep blues and muted shades of red for a more delicate approach to playing up the theme.
2. Mix Natural Textures
Natural textures consist of things like wood, stone and woven fibers. Mixing and layering an array of natural textures will not only add a level of sophistication but also a level of interest to the overall design. You can see these elements integrated throughout the dinnerware, serveware, table linens and centerpieces.
3. Coordinate Neutral Colored Serveware
Decorative serveware is the easiest way to highlight your menu items. Whether you’re making recipes from scratch or picking up something ready-to-serve, serveware elevates your tablescape with the least amount of effort. Neutral-colored bowls, platters and dishes will not take away from the food they are designed to enhance nor the decor you’ve chosen to dress your table.
4. Set Individual Place Settings
Setting individual place settings immediately distinguishes a sophisticated tablescape from a more casual one. If you want to achieve an elevated look for a laid back affair, set casual dinnerware, flatware and glassware in a traditional table setting in front of each seat. The formality of “setting the table” will help you achieve a more refined look.
5. Feature Floral
Whether they’re grocery-store bought or arranged by a professional, floral accents will take your tablescape to the next level. For this tablescape, we collaborated with the sister duo behind Patina and Petals who designed these stunning floral centerpieces. The mixed greenery and white flowers completely transformed the design to a level of sophistication our hearts desire.
