Most times we agree on decorations but by the time Halloween rolls around, we both laugh because our homes look very different decorated. My (Jenna) husband, Nick, loves Halloween over any other holiday. This is the holiday he does not hold back on decorating. At our home you’ll find large pumpkin head statues in our front yard and skeletons on the fireplace mantle. Unlike my house, I can assure you won’t be finding a bone or skull in Shannon’s home. However, when it came down to designing a tablescape, we both agreed it should be nothing less than how we design every tablescape – elegant, timeless and sophisticated. With that, we’re excited to share with you the steps to putting together a Sophisticated Halloween Tablescape this season!
We were beyond thrilled to collaborate with Patina & Petals on this tablescape who meticulously designed the floral centerpieces that took this design to the next level. Be sure to visit their website and consider this darling sister duo for your next special event floral needs.

As you begin pulling together a sophisticated Halloween tablescape it is important to remember the main rule – there are no rules. We remember being told, “Do not mix black with brown,” or “You cannot wear white after Labor Day.” Therefore, we followed those rules. However, now as creative adults, we have come to realize breaking the rules is in fact where the best design breakthroughs happen.

5 Easy Ways to Set a Sophisticated Halloween Tablescape
A sophisticated tablescape is a lot easier to put together than it looks. Our main goal when designing a dining table for a gathering is to make it functional, warm and welcoming and to design a “wow” factor. Some table designs give the wow without providing the functionality. A functional table design will simplify your role as a hostess and provide you ample space for serving ware, pitchers and extra napkins. A warm and welcoming table design will encourage your guests to stay seated for a longer period of time. The dining room is where memories are made, and the more time a guest stays seated is more time to connect with one another. Finally, a table that provides a “wow” factor doubles as a conversation starter, and let’s be honest, who doesn’t enjoy a beautiful tablescape?

1. Choose a Monochromatic Color Palette
Do you remember the rule which stated not to mix black with browns? Yes, we broke that rule for this tablescape. A monochromatic color scheme is made up of different shades of a single color. Typical Halloween decorations call for Orange and Black. However, by choosing different tones of black and/or brown, you can create a similar look that is more pleasing to the eye.

2. Coordinate Dark Dinnerware and Serveware
We have been asked many times where we place the entrees when serving guests. As a hostess, we spend plenty of time preparing the entrée in the kitchen. With that, we wholeheartedly believe dinner should become part of the table décor and enhance the overall look. So, when you’re setting the table, be sure to coordinate all dinnerware and serveware for a cohesive look.
While white dinnerware is our number one entertaining essential, black dinnerware and serveware is a must for a sophisticated Halloween tablescape. The rich dark tones found in a cast iron pan and/or stoneware tie the whole look together without much thought.

3. Incorporate Cozy Vibes
Nothing creates a warm and welcoming space like a throw blanket. This may just be our go-to #HostfulHack of the season because we simply cannot get enough! Use a throw blanket as a table runner to incorporate a snug and comfortable sentiment.

4. Feature Seasonal Floral
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again – floral is the most important aspect to setting a sophisticated tablescape. There are many options to consider when designing a centerpiece but nothing compares to a vase full of gorgeous flowers. Flowers bring life to the table. For this centerpiece, feature seasonal floral to tie your whole look together. Pairing dried stems with fresh White Anemone coordinates well with the monochromatic color palette.

5. Add Varying Heights to Complete Your Sophisticated Halloween Tablescape
Adding varying heights to a centerpiece allows the eye to continue moving and exploring. This is that wow factor that’ll complete your sophisticated look. Always be mindful where guests will be sitting and the placement of the centerpiece. It’s always important not to obstruct the view of two guests seated in front of one another to encourage conversation. Keep the taller and larger centerpiece decorations to the outer edges of the centerpiece and the smaller pieces towards the inside.
