When we think back on Labor Day spent as kids, we often remember celebrating the entire day at Mimi’s house on the water with family. Mimi has always been keen on hosting us all for holiday weekends and serving up a barbecue-style lunch with all the fixings. And as we recall her extensive spread displayed across her dining room table, one thing often sticks out. Mimi always served chips and dip, and she still does! Chips and dip are a staple at Mimi’s whether they’re served as a snack before the main course or as a side item to feature an entree. With Labor Day right around the corner, we decided to highlight her party go-to and came up with this fun Labor Day party idea – a chips and dip pairing party!

What You Need
While planning our pairing party, we knew exactly where we’d go to source the chips, and that is Trader Joe’s. If you’re not familiar, Trader Joe’s is known for its low prices on unique offerings. With that, we were able to find a good selection of specialty chips you don’t typically find at big-box grocers.
Chips are a quick and easy snack most guests will enjoy and something you often see at Labor Day barbecues. With that, we chose a barbecue-inspired pairing menu to play up the theme. To spark further interest, we seleceted a variety of unique flavors and textures including:
- Cornbread Crisps
- Barbecue Popped Ridges
- Lentil and Potato Crunchy Curls.
In order to play up this Labor Day party idea, you will need an assortment of dips to complement your selection of chips. We simply chose the dip options based on what we would typically see paired at a traditional barbeque. For instance, what would we typically see mixed in with cornbread? Cheese! What do we typically top our barbecue sandwich with? Vegetables!
To our surprise, everything paired perfectly! Here’s what we chose:
- Pimento Cheese Dip
- Caramelized Onion Dip
- Bacon Cheddar Ranch Dip.
The best thing about these dips is they are ready-to-serve. Simply spoon them into a decorative bowl for a homemade look and serve next to their chip counterparts.
#HostfulHack: Spoon premade dips and sauces into decorative serving bowls for a homemade look.

How to Setup A Chips and Dip Pairing Party
1. Choose your setting.
This Labor Day party idea is perfect as an indoor gathering or an outdoor soirée. We opted to incorporate our tasting throughout our Labor Day tablescape and full spread, but it could easily be set on a sideboard, coffee table or console table.
2. Choose your serveware.
Elevate your chips and dip display by selecting an assortment of decorative bowls and baskets to coordinate with your Labor Day tablescape.
- Mini dip bowls are perfect for serving up the dips.
- Place the mini dip bowls inside lidded warming baskets, which are perfect for serving the chips. The lids are functional and come in handy outdoors to keep flies and bugs at bay. We found ours at HomeGoods but these are similar.
#HostfulHack: Use lidded baskets as decorative serveware, especially when dining outdoors. Line the baskets with linen napkins or flour sacks to protect both the food and the baskets. Use the lids to cover the food to keep flies and bugs as bay.
- Decorative serving bowls are also perfect for displaying the chips. Mix and match them with the baskets for a unique and sophisticated look.
3. Set your Chips & Dip Pairing Guide and Food Labels
Download, print and cut out your Chips & Dip Pairing Guide and Food Labels. We like to use a paper cutter to achieve straight edges. Then, display next to your pairings to guide guests through their tasting.
- Frame your Chips & Dip Pairing Guide for an elevated look.
#HostfulHack: Shop your own home for coordinating picture frames to temporarily frame party printables. You don’t always have to buy new when creating a thoughtful design.
- Use standard binder clips as food label holders by clipping to the bottom of each label and removing the handles.
#HostfulHack: Standard binder clips are a unique and cost effective way to create food label or place card holders. Simply clip onto the bottom of your food label or place card, then remove the handles and set your label or card in its designated place. Don’t have the color you need? Use spray paint to match to your decor!
