Flowers are all around this time of year, so we’ve rounded up some of our best tips and tricks for creating your own arrangements in your own home. Floral arrangements are so versatile–I love to give them as gifts and I love to use them for tablescapes. I certainly love a good professional arrangement as much as the next person, but sometimes budgets require a more DIY approach! After many years of practice, this is what I’ve learned:

Choosing flowers at the grocery store
I love to go to Trader Joe’s for flowers–they always have such a beautiful selection at reasonable prices. After shopping there to create our centerpieces for several years, I have some tips!
Color palette
It’s best if you head into the store with a general idea of what you’d like to shop, but you also want to keep yourself open to creating with whatever is available. I find creating a set color palette before going into the store can be too limiting. Instead, I like to approach this with a general direction in mind. For example, we’re planning our spring photos now so I’ll be looking for flowers in soft, muted tones. Let the store’s selection guide you from there!

Spray roses forever
Always. Get. The. Spray. Roses. These beautiful flowers come in so many colors and they really take your arrangement to the next level. They work wonderfully as filler in so many arrangements for so many occasions.

Fluff your roses
This is one of my favorite tricks for grocery store roses! Watch the video below to see just how easy it can be to get your roses to quickly open up and bring their beauty to your arrangement.
Don’t forget your greens
Greens are an important part of any arrangement. I always like to pick up at least two bunches of greenery when I’m shopping for flowers because they provide such a nice structure and dimension to any arrangement. I usually find myself gravitating towards muted greens with soft, organic shapes.

Get in there
Don’t be afraid to take flowers into your hand in the store and group them together. I’m always taking them out of the bucket and seeing how different flowers and colors look together in my hand–it makes a huge difference in the final product! The more time spent carefully choosing your flowers and greenery at the store means the easier it will be to create a beautiful arrangement at home!

Repurpose vessels for your arrangement
Classic vases and planters will always be beautiful, but it’s also fun to consider employing a pitcher to do the job normally a planter or vase would. We absolutely love pairing floral arrangements with pitchers for a unique visual that adds charm and style to any space.

Decorative bowls can add interesting texture and a visual weight to your arrangements. All you need is a bit of chicken wire to make any vessel arrangement-friendly. We also like to place a glass bowl or vase inside a decorative basket for even more interesting texture.

Looking to gift a flower arrangement to a loved one? Use a pitcher that can be used in a variety of ways, making your gift not only stunning, but also functional and purposeful.
