By the time we arrive in early September every year, we’re simply itching to transition our homes from a summer look to a fall vibe. We have to admit, there’s something about refreshing our homes with each season that is so enticing. The earthy neutrals of fall set the stage for so many gatherings with friends and family for a season of giving and gratitude. However, along with the pull to jump into fall, it’s also a busy season for most of us. School, work, holidays, family obligations – there isn’t much spare time on our calendars. When do you have time to freshen up your home for the new season? And, what items are the easiest to swap out to change the aesthetic in your home with minimal effort? We’ve got these answers and more as we share decor swaps that’ll easily transition your home from summer to fall.

Natural & Neutral
When styling your home for a new season, remember that it’s not necessary to go completely literal with the upcoming holiday or season. Don’t worry about buying specific Halloween or Thanksgiving decor that only can be used for a very limited time each year. Instead, go natural and neutral.
Go natural: Think of what colors you might find in nature during a specific season. For fall, it’s all about the colors of foliage and the earthy hues that are reminiscent of an autumn harvest.
Go neutral: Pair the colors of the season with neutrals throughout your home, such as creams and beiges. Stick with neutrals that can be repurposed and reused throughout the entire year, and then add seasonal hues and textures to refresh your home.

Don’t get us wrong: we do love seasonal decor. But there are ways to easily transition into a new season without breaking the bank or having to lug holiday boxes down from your attic. With this busy season we’re all in right now, look at welcoming fall into your home with a new ease and intention.

Decor Swaps That’ll Easily
Transition Your Home From Summer to Fall
One goal of ours this year is to be more intentional with what and how we do things in our lives – this includes how we decorate our homes. Decor swaps are the easiest way to move from one season to the next without too much hassle or effort; it also allows us to be thoughtful and intentional about how we’re decorating and why. From textures and colors to scents and greenery, there are so many ways to bring the season into your home – without having to decorate every square inch of your house or purchase a slew of new decor pieces. So, we invite you to embrace this intentional living with us by not going “all out,” but instead, selectively choosing the items that truly add to your home and transition your space to fall without any stress or overwhelm.

Decor Swap: Greenery
Add life to your fall decor with flowers that evoke the natural hues of the season, such as darker, burnt colors. For a more subtle transition into the new season, mix with fresh greens, such as eucalyptus, and lighter flowers, such as white waxflower. Incorporating florals not only adds life and visual interest, but speaks to your sense of smell, creating a welcoming and calming environment – guests or no guests.

In addition to fresh florals, dried and faux greenery work perfectly in the season of harvests. This Dried Natural Star Grass Bunch brings a light and airy organic texture to your space, and can be reused and repurposed on tablescapes and in other areas of your home.
Decor Swap: Artwork
Art has a powerful impact on a room. Choosing pieces that not only speak to you but also bring in a seasonal feel will instantly alter the overall vibe in a room. For fall, choose artwork with deeper, more dramatic colors, but remember to consider the overall color scheme in your space. If you have other darker decor pieces around the artwork or if you have dark walls, balance out your look with lighter fall colors, such as muted oranges, yellows, or beige.
Decor Swap: Seasonal Accents
When swapping out decor pieces for a transition into a new season, there is a world of possibilities! Consider the textures and colors of items around your home that can easily be moved and replaced. Fall is all about creating a cozy space where loved ones can gather, reflect, and feel gratitude for one another. Create this aesthetic with soft textures in seasonal hues that make guests want to get comfortable and stay a while.
What types of home decor items are easily swapped out for the fall? Think pillows, throws, candles, linens and tabletop accents. Pillows, throws and linens have the ability to not only have the colors of the season, but also have textures that are soft and inviting. Similarly, candles serve a dual purpose: seasonal hues and scents. When choosing items to swap out this fall, consider all the ways they add to your space. An easy way to do this is to go through the five senses. (Wondering about the sense of taste? Check out this post for fall food inspo.)
Summer to Fall Transition
Where should I focus my attention?
It’s easy to get overwhelmed when you have the goal of decorating your whole home. Not only does that require a lot of time, it also requires a lot of stuff. Remember, less is more in some cases, and that includes transitioning your home decor to a new season. There’s no need to decorate your whole home; instead, choose to be intentional with how and where you swap out your decor to make a statement without having to acquire more pieces or spend copious amounts of time decorating. So, let’s home in on two places that will catch guests’ attention and make a statement without the overwhelm.
One Foyer Accent Table, Two Looks
While sometimes overlooked, there’s no denying that the foyer is what guests see first. It’s also the space that greets you as you and your family come home from your busy days. Allow yourself to be greeted with a fresh and calming look for the season by focusing on this area as your transition to fall.
When we were styling Shannon’s foyer table, we decided to create two different looks to showcase how there’s no “right” answer when styling your home. In the picture on the left, we decorated with a small, neutral pumpkin in a glass case to bring in the festive feeling of the season. We paired this with a White Stoneware Pitcher and seasonal candle to balance out the look. On the right, we styled stunning fall flowers in a deep red hue, with fresh greenery. We paired with two, small neutral pumpkins and chose a larger lamp to balance out the look.
In both, we styled the bottom shelf of this accent table to be seasonal yet functional. When choosing items for your accent table, go with decorative baskets or pillows underneath as an easily accessible storage location.
Accent Shelves
Welcome your home into the new season by focusing on your accent shelving. When guests arrive, their eyes naturally gravitate to items at eye level, making shelves a perfect area to spend time and effort refreshing. Include an item that’ll add texture and life to this space, such as fresh or dried greenery, along darker accents, such as decorative pumpkins. Allow this space to feel open and airy by remembering that less is more and to intentionally choose decor pieces that enhance the space through color, texture or scent.
It’s important to remember that when decorating your home, there’s no one size fits all solution. We’re all unique individuals with different tastes and aesthetics. So, when transitioning your home from summer to fall, get creative and play around a little bit. Let go of the idea that there’s a right or wrong way to style your home. Instead, embrace your unique style, try out different ideas, and allow yourself to have fun as you enter into a new season. If that feels overwhelming, focus on small areas, such as accent shelves or a foyer table. This will make the idea of refreshing your space more manageable and much less overwhelming.
Go Beyond Decor
When looking to create a fall aesthetic, go beyond your home decor by considering your wardrobe. By bringing in the colors of the season through your clothing, you become part of the festive look and feel, as well. Similar to home decor, choose hues of foliage and the harvest season. An added bonus: you’ll feel a boost in mood by simply dressing for the time of year!
