The holidays are over and the new year is here. How are we going to prepare ourselves for the year ahead? We encourage you to take time this winter to create a space in your home for rest and reflection. With our lives often feeling like a whirlwind, having a space that is meant for a slower pace will allow you to recenter yourself and realign with your own goals, happiness and, importantly, your ability to connect with others. To help you create this type of space, we’ve developed three home decor pairings that’ll turn your favorite space in your home into an oasis of restoration and consideration.
Each of these curated pairings brings you closer to a space you want to be in. Because you need a cozy spot to recenter yourself, rest and reflect on times past so that you can open yourself up to appreciate the present.
There’s something inherently restorative about a burning candle. A warm glow filling the space around it; a flickering light that allows you to take a deep breath and reflect. Incorporating candles in any room will effortlessly make the area feel more relaxed and inviting. The best part about candles? The sheer variety of shapes, colors and sizes makes it easy to personalize to your style.
Complete the look. Pair your decorative candle choice with an accentual matchbox for an added bit of personality and luxury. Simply place a catch-all bowl next to your candle with a couple matchboxes for an effortlessly stylish and functional space. Not only will a unique matchbox nearby lend a curated feel to an area, it’ll also gift the convenience of a nearby match whenever you want a minute of relaxation and restoration.
Oftentimes, neutrals are confused with light colors, but there are neutrals all across the color spectrum, and they all have the same effect: a cohesive and calming aesthetic. While you might see creams, taupes and beiges at Shannon’s house, Jenna’s has those mixed with darker neutrals, such as blacks and darker grays. Both of our homes showcase calming and cohesive neutrals, however our tastes differ just a little when it comes to which neutrals we choose. Whichever shades you choose, these colors will inspire a calm atmosphere and blend seamlessly with any other existing decor.
To add visual interest, we always recommend opting for pairing different neutrals together. Check out the graphic below to get started. All five of these neutral hues will always match with each other, so mix and match however you like. Additionally, when layered with each other, your design will look like an antidote for chaos, presenting a calming and inviting place for you to rest and restore your mind, body and soul.
Finding neutrals is only one way to visually create a space for rest and reflection. Another more-overlooked way is through texture. Of course, texture has a dual function: visual interest and touch; so, it’s an element that can instantly elevate your space to an oasis you want to be in. Choose textures that are soft, whether that be cotton, velvet, flannel, fleece, or others that make you want to cozy into it. Going with a variety of textures adds an approachable sophistication to your space, so mix and match to find what you love for your home.
As a final piece to bring together your new space, select your favorite greenery and place in a vase or vessel for an added boost of joy and beauty. Bringing in a piece of nature always offers a sense of ease and oneness with the outdoors, allowing you to feel calm and collected. If you don’t have a knack for keeping greenery alive, choose dried or faux greenery, which is just as beautiful and requires very little maintenance (just a quick and occasional dusting!).
Finally, you might’ve heard us profess our love of pitchers in the past. (It’s one of our favorite tools for hosting and entertaining because it makes one of our favorite Hostful Hacks possible!) However, there’s yet another level to owning a pitcher: a pitcher makes for an ideal and unique vase for fresh or faux greenery.
It seems counterintuitive to say that in order to be present, we must look back. However, we believe that when we look back, we can appreciate our cherished memories, learn from past mistakes, and move forward with peace in our hearts. Then, and only then, can we truly be ready to embrace the here-and-now with open arms. So, be sure to create your space of reflection in order to be present for yourself and those you love the most.
Bee well, friend!
