As parents, we all know that shopping for our kids can be a daunting task. With new trends emerging every day, it can be hard to keep up and keep our kids stylish without breaking the bank. Not to mention the piles and piles of laundry. That’s where a capsule wardrobe comes in! A capsule wardrobe is a collection of essential clothing items that can be mixed and matched to create a variety of outfits. It’s a great way to simplify your child’s wardrobe while still keeping them stylish and comfortable. I (Jenna) just created a capsule wardrobe for Charley during our recent closet purge and the approach has made a HUGE difference. Here’s our tips for how to create a capsule wardrobe for your kids at different ages:
Little Kid Capsule Wardrobe:
As your child grows, their wardrobe needs will change. Little kids still need comfortable clothes for playtime, that are easy to put on and comfortable. Here are some items to include in a little kid capsule wardrobe:
- 3-4 pairs of pants or leggings
- 3-4 long-sleeve shirts
- 3-4 short-sleeve shirts
- 2-3 dresses (for girls)
- 2-3 skirts (for girls)
- 2-3 pairs of shorts
- 1-2 pairs of jeans
- 1-2 cardigans or sweaters
- 1-2 pairs of sneakers or sandals

Big Kid Capsule Wardrobe:
Bigger kids are starting to develop their own sense of style and may be more interested in fashion trends. However, it’s important to still prioritize comfort and versatility in their wardrobe. Here are some items to include in a big kid capsule wardrobe:
- 3-4 pairs of jeans or leggings
- 3-4 long-sleeve shirts
- 3-4 short-sleeve shirts
- 2-3 dresses (for girls)
- 2-3 skirts (for girls)
- 2-3 pairs of shorts (for boys)
- 1-2 cardigans or sweaters
- 1-2 hoodies or sweatshirts
- 1-2 jackets or coats
- 1-2 dressy outfits (for special occasions)
- 1-2 pairs of sneakers or sandals
- 1-2 pairs of dress shoes (for special occasions)

Teen Capsule Wardrobe:
As your child becomes a teenager, their wardrobe needs may become even more complex. They may have different clothing requirements for school, sports, and social events. Here are some items to include in a teen capsule wardrobe:
- 3-4 pairs of jeans or leggings
- 3-4 long-sleeve shirts
- 3-4 short-sleeve shirts
- 2-3 dresses (for girls)
- 2-3 skirts (for girls)
- 2-3 pairs of shorts (for boys)
- 1-2 cardigans or sweaters
- 1-2 hoodies or sweatshirts
- 1-2 jackets or coats
- 1-2 dressy outfits (for special occasions)
- 1-2 pairs of sneakers

How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe for Kids
Building a capsule wardrobe for your children is a great way to simplify their closet while still keeping them stylish and comfortable. The first step is to assess your child’s current wardrobe and identify any gaps that need to be filled. Look for items that can be mixed and matched to create a variety of outfits, and choose colors and patterns that work well together. A personal favorite of mine is H&M’s line of mix and match pieces that are created sustainably (and are so cute)!
Start by selecting a few key pieces that your child will wear often, such as comfortable pants or leggings and versatile tops. Choose high-quality items that can withstand the wear and tear of playtime and that are easy to care for. From there, you can add in complementary pieces like dresses or shorts, and accessories like hats and shoes. Keep in mind that a capsule wardrobe is meant to simplify your child’s wardrobe–and your laundry–so be intentional with your choices and make sure each item can be worn in multiple ways.
As your child grows, their wardrobe needs will change, so it’s important to regularly assess and update their capsule wardrobe. Purge items that no longer fit or suit your child’s style, and add in new pieces as needed. With a well-curated capsule wardrobe, your child will have a closet full of clothes that they love to wear and that make them feel confident and comfortable. Plus, it will save you time and money in the long run by avoiding the need to constantly buy new clothes.
