Valentine’s Day is a special holiday for expressing love and affection, and it’s not just for romantic couples. This holiday can also be a great opportunity to show your love and appreciation for your family. Here are a few ideas for making Valentine’s Day special for your family:
1. Have a family movie night
Gather your family together and cuddle up on the couch to watch a romantic movie or a heartwarming family film. Pop some popcorn, make some hot cocoa, and enjoy the evening together.
Some of our favorite family movies for this time of year are:
- Lady and the Tramp
- Shrek
- The Princess Bride
- Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown
- My Girl
- The Little Rascals
- Frozen
- The Princess Diaries
To help you host your own Valentine’s Day family movie night, we created 8 different movie ticket printables featuring the movies listed above. Just download, print, and put on your favorite movie!
2. Create a Valentine’s Day scavenger hunt
Hide small gifts or notes with sweet messages around the house for your family members to find. This can be a fun and interactive way to show your love and appreciation for each family member.
3. Have a special family dinner
Cook a favorite meal or try out a new recipe together as a family. You can even set the table with red and pink decorations and candles to add a festive touch.

4. Exchange homemade valentines
Instead of buying store-bought cards, encourage your family members to make their own valentines for each other. This can be a fun and creative activity for all ages.
5. Plan a family outing
Go on a fun outing together as a family, such as a trip to a local amusement park or a hike in a beautiful outdoor setting. Choosing experiences over things is a great way to reconnect with the ones you love and create lasting memories.

6. Have a family game night
Gather your family together for a night of fun and laughter with board games, card games, or video games. You can even have a prize for the winner, such as a small gift or a special treat.

7. Do a family craft project
Get creative together as a family by doing a craft project. This could be something as simple as decorating cookies or cupcakes, or something more involved like painting or creating a scrapbook.

8. Write letters to each other
Take some time to sit down and write heartfelt letters to each other expressing your love and appreciation. These letters can be a special keepsake to look back on in the future.
9. Have a family photo shoot
Plan a family photo shoot with a professional photographer or take some candid shots yourselves. These photos can be a great way to capture special memories and show your love for each other. We were fortunate enough to have both our families photographed separately and together when we took our trip to the Ritz earlier last year. Now we have lasting images to cherish and we’re so thankful we have them!

10. Give small gestures of love
Small gestures of love can mean a lot, especially when done consistently. Consider doing things like making breakfast in bed for your family members, or surprising them with their favorite candy or flowers. These small gestures have the most meaning when you take the time to choose a gesture that directly speaks to your recipient’s love language:
- Words of affirmation might mean a well-thought compliment or words of encouragement before the school or work day begins.
- Quality time might mean working on a puzzle together or choosing a special project that aligns with the recipient’s hobbies.
- Physical touch might mean a calming massage before bedtime or a big hug welcoming them home.
- Acts of service might mean cooking (and cleaning!) a special dinner.
- Receiving gifts might mean flowers, candy, or a nicely framed photo.

Valentine’s Day is a wonderful opportunity to show your love and appreciation for your family. Whether you choose to do something big and elaborate or something small and simple, the most important thing is to spend quality time together and show your love for each other.
